Studies by Searcy and Others (1993) and Nixon (1992) were conducted to determine whether students learning was as good as traditional education when achieved via distance education. Neither found significant difference in average GPAs between the formats though Searcy found student completion rates might be higher in the traditional sections, thus raising questions concerning factors impeding student course completion: students needing more guidance or more extensive interaction with faculty and the issue of technology access as it might affect low-income, minority students.
